Posterior Knee Pain – Causes and Treatment

Posterior knee pain can be due to a number of reasons, the pain may develop over time and this is an indication that part of the knee has a problem. Sometimes the pain develops suddenly because of an injury; by paying attention to the common symptoms that you experience and to how your pain behaves, makes it easy for you to work out the cause of the pain.   • Bakers Cyst

This is the inflammation of the fluid filled sac at the back of the knee, it is also known as popliteal bursa. It is one of the most common causes for pain behind the knee, this brings about swelling and tightness of the knee. Straightening the knee, bending, walking and even kneeling becomes a problem. Bakers cyst can come on when you receive a blow at the back of your knee, usually it comes on gradually and is often associated with arthritis. It can be treated by exercising, ice, Electrotherapy, aspiration and occasionally surgery will be needed. After the treatment, it can take a few months for the pain to settle down and if it is not treated properly, it has a tendency to recur.

  • Arthritis

These are the changes that occur in the bone and are usually caused by wear and tear or inflammation at times. The symptoms are swelling, pain, morning stiffness and reduced leg movements. The pain usually becomes worse after prolonged rest, cold weather and activities. It can be treated with knee brace, exercises, ice, heat, and weight loss, acupuncture, walking aids, medication, gel knee pad and cushioned footwear. After the treatment, the changes in the bone cannot be undone, but the pain is reduced, the knee function is improved and deterioration is prevented.

  • Knee sprain

This is the overstretching or tearing of one of the ligaments in the knee, the symptoms are swelling, general pain, and decreased pain. Depending on the severity of the sprain, it can become difficult to move the knee or do any physical activities. In most cases, a force through the knee or a sudden twisting movement brings about a knee sprain. It can be treated with knee brace, and exercises. Recovery depends on how much damage has been done to the knee. It usually takes a period of 2 weeks to 3 months to recover fully; it all depends on the severity of the injury.

  • Hamstring Injury

This is a tear in the one of the hamstring muscles found at the back of the thigh. The symptom is a general pain of the knee where the hamstring tendon is attached to the bone, or a sharp pain with sudden movements. With this injury, it is usually difficult to bend the leg, deceleration when moving or sudden acceleration. It can be treated by exercising or massage and usually takes 6-12 weeks to recover fully.

  • Ligament Damage

ACL, PCL or MCL injuries and tears can result in posterior knee pain. If you suspect you have torn or ruptured one of these ligaments you need to get a specialist to do MRI scans and get your Knee treated ASAP. Read more here about ACL injuries here
